The first time I had ever seen Hollyhocks, was in Ohio a few years back, while on vacation. I thought that they were so pretty, I decided to plant some this spring. I am not a gardener and have not planted anything from a seed in years, so you can understand my excitement when I saw these little hollyhocks sprout up and thought to myself, that maybe there is a little green in this thumb after all.
I did some reading on hollyhocks before planting them and the information that I gathered was that most plants do not bloom until the second year. I was disappointed but I would be patient and wait until next summer when I would have some beautiful blooms on my plants.
A few weeks ago, much to my surprise, flower buds started to appear on my plants. Then ta-da, the beautiful blooms that were not supposed to arrive until next summer....arrived!

As the summer continues.... I am so looking forward to watching the many blooms open as they work their way to the top.

You DO have a green thumb!
How sweet of you to take pictures of the growing process and share with us.
God knows how to bless and you have been blessed.
Your hollyhocks are beautiful! I have a couple of plants that come up every year. I'm so glad yours are doing so well and in the first year.
I love, love, love Hollyhocks. They are my favorite flower and remind me of my grandmother's garden. We planted them around our pool but Japanese beetles feasted on them and we had to cut them down. Luckily, I can now enjoy looking at yours. Thanks!
