We gave our fireplace a face lift right before Christmas. Our house did not have a fireplace so my hubby installed one and built the mantle above it. We knew we wanted slate or tile around it but we procrastinated for awhile until we finally found tile that we both liked. My husband installed it himself, he is pretty handy and gifted (I think I will keep him). We save a lot of money when it comes to household fixes and remodels. Below you will see the BEFORE, DURING and AFTER. The during took awhile because he and my son also installed brand new hardwood floors! It all turned out beautiful!
