Our Welcome Guests

Around this same time of year (last year), my husband and I were both woken up in the wee morning hours to a scratching sound on the outside (or inside)  wall next to where our bed sits.  It continued on for what seemed like forever.  It was pretty creepy because we didn't know what was making the sound.

We thought it was something like this...

But thank goodness, in the daylight, when my husband went to check out the wall to see if he could find out the source of the scratching noise.  He instead, found this...

A bird was building her nest on top of the metal flashing that covers up our air conditioning lines that run up the side of our two story home. After we learned of the nest, we were less annoyed by the scratching sound that would continue to wake us up early in the morning hours.

When Spring arrived, we did not mind hearing the "chirp-chirp" sound of the baby birds while they were in the nest.  Unfortunately, we did not take any pictures from last winter when the nest was first being built, to the spring when the baby birds hatched and then flew the coop.

Well...  guess what? We heard the scratching sound again on the wall last night, so I went out in the morning, (camera in hand) to find this...
Mama bird holding on to the stucco, on the side of our house, (for dear life) waiting for her mate, who was in a nearby tree with twigs in his mouth, ready to continue building his masterpiece.

Here is a close-up shot ( a little blurry though)

So, while we lose some sleep, as the new nest is being built, our reward will be to see those cute little baby birds and hearing their sweet songs...the songs of Spring.

Awww...how cute. The bird in the photo looks like a male house sparrow. Aren't you glad it wasn't mice? haha...we've had that problem but thankfully not this year!

Oh you are so lucky to hearing the first sounds of spring! We are not looking forward to hearing the wind howl Thursday night and all day Friday with wind chills as low as -30 degrees! How many days until spring????

Enjoy your birdies! I would be!

How special. They love your home and now it's theirs. Good for you to let them stay for a season. The sounds of Spring in your own backyard (home).

Definitely better than a mouse any day!

One time a mama bird built a nest in the wreath attached to our glass storm door. We were able to watch everything through the glass! Cool...but what a mess!
